Without any iota of doubt, crude oil plays a vital role in our society. Oil represent much more than just one of the main energy sources use by mankind. Petroleum products from refining of crude oil serve as a feedstock for several consumer goods thus playing a developing and important role in the lives of individuals.
It becomes more interesting on the other hand where it holds potential hazards to the environment. The most widespread and dangerous consequence of oil and gas activities is POLLUTION. Just take a look at the above picture and you can see how a vegetation is being destroyed by oil spillage.What a loss to the FARMERS and subsequent increase in prices of food produce. In developing countries, emergency response to such spills as not usually very effective as it takes some time for the oil company to stop the spill. Many oil companies are still not adopting the pollution prevention practices. At the end, the HOST COMMUNITIES suffer the consequences.
